Cultural Events
The
High Country is home to some great venues and
museums to browse and enjoy. Throughout the
communities of Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner
Elk there are many things to see and do if
one finds an interest in the performing or
visual arts. Of course, being home to both
Appalachian State University and Lees-McRae
College, the High Country area is a great place
to enjoy various cultural and artistic
endeavors.
If you enjoy theatre performances, browse the
shows and show times at The Blowing Rock Stage
Company, the Blue Ridge Community Theatre, or
one of the many venues at both Appalachian State
University and Lees-McRae College. In fact, the
recently completed Hayes Performing Arts Center
houses the Blowing Rock Stage Company and has
been a wonderful addition to the area for those
that enjoy theatre, drawing large crowds for
many of their running shows. Horn in the West is
a long running performance in the area and a
must see for many. Horn in the West shows run
during the warmer months and take place at the
Daniel Boone Amphitheatre nearby the gorgeous
Daniel Boone Native Gardens.
Also in the warmer months both Appalachian State
University in Boone and Lees-McRae College in
Banner Elk host summer performing arts events
and special summer concert series.
If you like to browse art galleries or purchase
fine art, there are several galleries throughout
our area of the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. The
best place to go to check out galleries is
downtown Boone NC. Appalachian State
University’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts
is a fantastic place to visit and browse local
art as well as visiting artists work. Also, in
the downtown area Boone hosts an art crawl where
participating galleries downtown open their
doors and local restaurants sometimes serve up
some of their delectable goodies. Downtown
Blowing Rock is also home to some fine art
galleries. Also, most don’t know it but tucked
away in the charming, historic area of Valle
Crucis there are a relatively large number of
galleries that showcase a variety of mediums.
Ashe County NC has it's own unique mix of
cultural events, ranging from West Jefferson's
Christmas In July to the Mountain Music
Jamboree. Christmas in July is a one day only,
free festival featuring handmade crafts from the
Western North Carolina Mountains, mouthwatering
food, and the best in traditional mountain and
bluegrass music. The event draws more than
20,000 people in one day, each and every year.
The Mountain Music Jamboree is another example
of how people like to have fun in Ashe County.
Not only to visitors get to enjoy the finest
traditional music and dance show around,
clogging, and square dancing, but also a famous
country style buffet featuring everything from
country fried chicken and mashed potatoes to
cherry pie. The Jamboree takes place every
Saturday night in Glendale Springs NC.
